Middle School Girls Camp

June 14 - 19, 2010
rising 7th, 8th, and 9th graders

Cost: $170
(scholarships are available)

This camp is just for girls! It’s a four-day experience that focuses on girls becoming young teens. Christmount’s female camp staff will lead the event, which will look at issues facing middle school youth, like self-esteem, social interaction and relationships, understanding and developing personal values, getting along with others, and making life decisions. Through group discussions, games, singing, creative writing, crafts, nature study, and guest speakers from the community, the girls will learn more about themselves and the world in which they must live and thrive.

PARENTS/GUARDIANS: This camp, as all camps, depends on every camper being here for the entire week. Camp is a special environment in which the camper bonds with a group for a few days and offers something unique to that group. If campers are constantly being interrupted with visits from family and friends or making phone calls home, the spirit of camp is destroyed. As in all camps at Christmount, campers do not generally make phone calls, unless there is an emergency. However, with Middle School Girls Camp, we do allow a brief five-minute phone call home on Wednesday evening. If you need to talk to the Director of the camp at some point during the week, please call the Christmount office and your call will be returned as soon as the Director has free time to call you back.

PLEASE NOTE!!!! The nature of this camp being all women is that the girls often feel free to discuss things they would not normally talk about with males present. Christmount's counselors are trained to be sensitive but also try to deal with these issues honestly and without the social stigma that these things sometimes carry. They try to make all issues serious rather than frivolous and do not allow girls to make fun of each other as they discuss things. Some of the topics that are typically discussed include prayer and spirituality, Christian understandings of sexuality and dating, physical changes/body issues, peer pressure and how to deal with it, and other relevant issues that occur to girls in middle school. Christmount tries to offer a place for these girls to discuss these issues maturely and seriously rather than in a light-hearted manner that so often happens in the halls at school.  Counselors are trained to be especially sensitive to possibly volatile issues involving human sexuality.

What to bring: comfortable clothing, swim suits, comfortable and practical shoes for hiking as well as lots of walking around (sandals are allowed, but sneakers or hiking boots are the most sensible: no high heels or other dress shoes), towels, bedding (sleeping bags or sheets for twin beds), pillow, toiletries (toothbrush/paste, hair brush/comb, soap and shampoo, deodorant, etc.), shower shoes, personal hygiene items, insect repellent, shower shoes, light jacket or sweater/sweatshirt, and flashlight.

Do not bring: firearms, fireworks, illegal drugs, alcohol, knives, jewelry, jam boxes, or anything of value that you would not want stolen or lost.

Camp begins at 5:00 on Monday afternoon. Sorry, we cannot take anyone before that time.
Camp ends
at 10:00 on Saturday morning. Please have someone at Christmount to pick up your camper at that time.

Transportation is available for local participants: call Christmount by Friday prior to camp to arrange for campers to be picked up on Wednesday.

Staff will contact all participants on Friday, June 11, or Saturday morning, June 12.

Registration forms need to be mailed to Christmount by Monday, June 7, 2010.

Activities include: small group discussion times; hiking; swimming; arts/crafts; singing; guest speakers in the evening; creative writing and journaling; self-esteem building; and worship/devotional time.

Christmount’s staff, while providing Christian examples and values for the campers, will not try to convert your child to a particular point of view or religious organization. Our purpose is to offer to campers a safe place to explore their own values and understanding of the world in which they live while offering examples to help their decision-making skills. Worship/devotional time is general in nature and does not seek to be a platform for one particular Christian viewpoint.

Christmount camps are open to all, regardless of race, nationality, and religion, in accordance with Christian values and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The only restrictions are those pertaining to age or to the physical requirements of a particular camp.

Christmount Camp Staff is certified by the Red Cross in First Aid and CPR. They are trained to care for campers in appropriate and sensitive ways.

In order for a camper to be registered for this camp, parents/guardians must fill out a Christmount camp application, which includes health and insurance information, emergency contacts, and parental permission signatures. All information is confidential and will be shared only with camp staff and medical personnel (if necessary).
