Camp Sunshine is a special camp for
adults with special needs (sometimes referred to as cognitively or developmentally challenged), 18 and over. It is a week of fun, fellowship, recreation,
crafts, singing, swimming, hiking, and worship. Campers will live in the cabins, with at
least one counselor for every four campers. The staff is a caring group who will supervise
the campers at all times and work with them personally to insure that each person has a
great time at camp.
Camp begins at 2:00 Monday afternoon (please note the change in beginning time from past years!)
Camp ends at 9:30 Friday morning
Each camp
has a limit for how many campers we can take. Campers are taken on
a first-come, first served basis, based on when the application is in our hands.
The camp is designed to be a vacation for the campers rather than a training event, so the
activities will be more recreational and fun than educational. There is no attempt made to
have the campers conform to a particular religious view, although the camp will have
worship and prayer times. Medication is kept by the staff and given in the mornings, after
meals, and before bedtime, as prescribed. If records need to be kept by the staff, please
provide forms upon arrival.
Partial scholarships are available and must be arranged in advance of camp. A scholarship
is built into the low camp price already, but smaller scholarships can be given.
Who comes to camp?
Campers must be 18 or older.
Campers must be able to take care of basic
personal hygiene, like going to the restroom, showering, and
dressing.
Campers must be able to understand and follow simple instructions.
Campers must be
approved by Rev. Jamie Brame, Church Relations Director. Special needs are to be discussed with the Directors
before the camper arrives at camp. Because the camp is not run by professional caregivers,
it is important that we follow these guidelines when accepting campers.
Caregivers must give Christmount staff as much information as possible
about communicating with campers, behavior issues, medical issues, and anything
else that staff and volunteers need to know to help campers have a good time at
camp.
Safety
Safety is an issue for all Christmount camps, but most especially
when special needs are involved. Campers are supervised 24 hours a day with no more than a
three to four campers to 1 camp staff ratio ( we use the four-to-one ratio with
especially high-functioning campers). Christmount also has volunteers who
help in supervision.
Medicine
Medicine is received from the campers at registration when
arriving at camp. Medicine is locked up and only two staff will have access to the meds.
Records of all medications will be kept. We must have the prescription
bottles rather than loose pills or a daily medication dispenser. We prefer that all medicine be brought to camp
in a large plastic baggie with the campers name on the bag. We will provide a baggie
if one is not available. Meds are distributed at prescribed times. Applications,
like eye drops or special ointments, are also applied as required. Staff dealing
with medications are trained by a nurse.
Activities
Singing, dancing, movies, swimming, short hikes, devotional times,
worship, bonfires, crafts, games, softball, volleyball, puzzles, talent show, and other
activities.
This camp is very active. campers must be able to walk!
What to bring
Comfortable clothes, jacket, bedding (sleeping bags are best), pillow, swim suit &
towel, sneakers, lots of socks, toiletry items (toothbrush/paste, soap, shampoo, brush,
comb, etc.), shower shoes, towels & washcloth, insect repellent, sunscreen, "creek"
shoes/sandals, medications (Christmount staff administers these, with all medications
locked up in a private place unavailable to campers or the public; we will keep written
records if you require them).
You must speak with Rev. Jamie Brame, Christmount Church Relations
Director, to get a form for this camp. After June 1, you may also speak with the
Summer Camp Director.
